WINNER OF OUR CHRISTMAS QUIZ 2020
Many congratulations to those of you who took part and who are now wiser in terms of various artists and the hidden meanings of their paintings, including Holbein's The Ambassadors, Titian's Bacchus and Ariadne, Bronzino's Venus and Cupid, and so on. Who knew that St Peter was often depicted in paintings by a grey beard and holding a set of keys and a book - some of us do now!
TIM BROWN was our worthy winner! He did a great job in doing his research and getting the largest number of details correct amongst those who took part - well done Tim! The prize will be on its way to you soon.
Many thanks to Neil Houghton for setting the quiz, it was interesting, challenging and fun.

Audrey Nightingale-Young: A Tribute
It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Audrey Nightingale-Young earlier in 2019. Audrey was a much-valued Member of the Society right up to the end and also a past Chairman of Blandford Art Society, and in later years, a Member of our Exhibitions Committee. She brought much energy, vitality, a sense of fun and new ideas during her time with our Society, and a lot of affection for her was felt by all those who knew her. She enjoyed exploring different media and her artwork was colourful, intuitive, spiritual, and appealing. Her legacy will live on in BAS as she 'fuelled' much enthusiasm for art that enlivened us all and will continue to do so in the years ahead.

And in her own words, written previously:-
"All my life I have sketched and painted both scenes around me and inner dreaming. Although not art school-trained, I have attended classes in life-drawing, oil painting, and watercolours. However, the greatest breakthrough came from a Blandford Art Society collage workshop which I thought I didn’t want to do! I find pictures harder and longer to complete, but the medium feels freer, using acrylic on wax texture and then spray techniques. The colour in ‘Spirit of Wisdom and Love’ shown here is glazed with silvery-gold acrylic which changes with the viewing angle, so the lady’s skin appears white or golden brown when viewed from different angles."

Mike Lofthouse Retires as
BAS Chair
Thursday, 20 December 2018
At the AGM held just after our Christmas Shared Lunch and the very interesting talk by Neil Houghton on The Bloomsbury Group of painters, a presentation was made to Mike Lofthouse who was stepping down as Chair of BAS after serving the past five years .
Mike has brought many gifts and much hard work to his time as Chair and he has been particularly instrumental in our special events such as our annual Open Exhibition and the Alfred Stevens Bicentenary in 2017, etc, also in networking with other groups in and around Blandford, in instigating the yearly BAS Bursary to a gifted art student at The Blandford School for their Higher Education art studies, and in many other ways too numerous to mention! The growth in membership has also increased to a healthy 70 or so under Mike's leadership. We also give our particular thanks to Mike and his wife, Elaine, for hosting numerous committee meetings and BAS socials in their lovely home and garden.
Sue Coke, who has hitherto been our BAS President, will now be stepping into the role as BAS Chair from January 2019, and we look forward to the future path that we will all take as a Society under her chairmanship.

A Seascape in Oils
Demonstration by Rob Adams
Thursday, 15 November 2018
Despite high winds and heavy rain, Members and their guests came along to Pimperne Village Hall to watch (and welcome back) Rob who painted a view of the beach looking towards Golden Cap in Dorset, in oils, using his own reference photo. Rob chose a 'letterbox' shaped canvas which he had primed previously at home and during the painting, highlighted that the tonal values of the different parts of the painting must be well considered, and be relative to one another. With helpful hints and good colour notes explained to those present, Rob again gave a very enjoyable demo and also exhibited a selection of other seascapes he had painted previously. The Golden Cap painting was admired by everyone, and amazingly, painted in only 1 3/4 hours!

BAS Open Exhibition 2017
Monday, 14 to Saturday, 19 August At the Corn Exchange, Blandford Our Preview on the evening of Sunday, 13 August in the Corn Exchange was the precursor to our Open Exhibition, when a large number of exhibitors and guests, including the Mayor, Councillor Peter Clark, and his consort, the Mayoress Linda Clark, gathered together. Our independent selection panel, including our Guest Artist, Patricia Burns, were also welcomed and our sincere thanks go to them for their commitment, time and expertise. Our Society Chairman, Mike Lofthouse, gave a few words of welcome and also announced the Competition winners for this year (details of which are below). A wide range of artwork was exhibited again this year, by a wide range of artists! That is, from enthusiastic and talented amateur artists and professional artists alike. Also, displayed was some fascinating project work by 11-13 year olds at The Blandford School. Society Members also led sessions individually throughout the week, inviting visitors to try their hand at a variety of different media. Thanks particularly go to our hard-working Exhibitions Committee: Patricia Burns, Audrey Nightingale-Young, Judith Ryde, and Tina Rowley for their imaginative ideas, organisational abilities and practical skills in making this Open Exhibition a pleasure to visit and enjoy. |

All-Day Pastel Workshop
with Keith Stott
Thursday, 20 October 2016
We welcomed back pastel artist and teacher, Keith Stott (Associate Member of the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts), for a second time this year as we had enjoyed his visit in May so much. This time, Keith led a day-long workshop with members and visitors working from their own reference material, whilst Keith helped and guided them with suggestions for improvements, as well as giving us the use of his wide collection of pastels. Subjects included: an autumn avenue of trees; a pheasant painted in lovely jewel colours; a forest with underlying flowers, plus more landscapes - real or imagined! Keith brought along one of his own beautiful pastel paintings - a landscape of a track through a clearing - which was definitely inspirational and helped us in our own works in progress. The day passed very quickly and was greatly enjoyed by everyone.

'Abstraction of a Landscape'
A Practical with Abi Kremer Thursday, 15 September 2016 Members and visitors greatly enjoyed a practical session with Abi Kremer, an experienced artist and teacher who, amongst other involvements, is currently a Fine Art Lecturer at Wiltshire College. Everyone was asked to bring their own chosen landscape photo to the session which would be abstracted, as well as materials including acrylic paints, palette knife, brushes, recycled newspapers and magazines, and glue sticks! Abi's encouraging and gentle teaching was inspiring to all present and, for those who were new to the idea of abstract art, they ended the session feeling they had learnt a new way of approaching their art and self-expression. 'Buildings Reflected in Water' - A Demonstration and Workshop by Graham Oliver
Thursday, 16 June 2016
Graham, who has led sessions for us a number of times in the past, returned with a demonstration in pastels which members and visitors followed in stages with their own versions. Graham used his recent sketch made 'en plein air' of Blandford's oldest bridge by the entrance to Bryanston School, incorporating delicious river reflections. Graham gave us clear and valuable advice in producing our own pastel paintings, along with colour suggestions, composition rules, paper-coverage, and how to make those all-important final details. We were grateful for his personal encouragement and many people were pleased with the paintings they had produced that afternoon!
Graham has is own gallery in Salisbury, Wiltshire - details of which can be found at this link:-

'Dramatic Pastel Skies' - A Demonstration by Keith Stott
Thursday, 19 May 2016
Keith (Associate Member of the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts) delighted members and visitors at our May meeting held at Pimperne Village Hall. He demonstrated two different skies using a range of coloured pastels, giving an informative and entertaining mix of his approach, methods, advice, and a little about his past career in textiles too.

He demonstrated two different skies using a range of coloured pastels, giving an informative and entertaining mix of his approach, methods, advice, and a little about his past career in textiles too.
Keith firstly painted a stormy sky using deep blues and purples, with a little yellow to represent white within the storm clouds - followed by a 'cloudburst sky' (see above) which some members were even allowed to finish for him!
BAS will be welcoming Keith again later this year, as he will be leading a day workshop at Pimperne Village Hall, so keep watching for details, as numbers will be restricted (for teaching purposes).

'Art Inside' - Members’ Exhibition 2016
Bank Holiday Monday, 2 May in Blandford Parish Church
The Members' Exhibition once again coincided with the town's bi-enniel Georgian Fayre, and there was a steady influx of visitors to the Parish Church where a good selection of Members' paintings were on display on easels throughout the main body of the Church. Those Members who were stewarding the event, were dressed in Georgian outfits including bonnets, aprons, etc, for the ladies, and curled wigs plus many-buttoned coats, etc, for the chaps (a big thank you to Rachel, our Exhibitions Secretary, for her costume expertise)!
An encouraging number of Members' paintings and greetings cards were sold during the event, and there were some interesting conversations with visitors about their own art interests. The Church's restoration fund, The Cupola Project, benefited from both the extra visitors and members' donations given in lieu of submission fees.

A Practical, Mixed-Media Session with Wendy Gregory
Thursday, 21 April 2016
Wendy brought along a still life made up of Spring flowers and foliage to inspire us at our April Meeting. Her enjoyable demonstration of how to feel the subject matter and express this in a loose, painterly way, rather than producing a highly-observed artwork, appealed to many at the session. Wendy's own beautiful paintings also served to inspire us!

Demonstration by Max Hale
Thursday, 17 March 2016
Members and visitors greatly enjoyed a demonstration given by Max Hale at our March meeting. Max, an established artist based in Wiltshire, painted several pictures (see below) from a number of still life objects using multi-media, ie. watercolour, pastel, pen, etc. His excellent teaching, use of bold colour, observation of light and form, and his encouragement to everyone listening in their own art 'journey', was really appreciated.

Talk by Gwen Yarker
Thursday, 18 February 2016
Members and visitors enjoyed a very interesting talk: 'Slade Painters in Dorset', given by Gwen Yarker from the Dorset County Museum, in February at our normal venue of Pimperne Village Hall.
Gwen's most recent book, 'Inquisitive Eyes: Slade Painters in Edwardian Wessex', was published early in 2016, and the topic was the subject of an exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, from 6 February to 12 June 2016. The exhibition was enjoyed by many, and the book is well worth a look!

......And Now for Something Different!
Project for the Next Four Years: 2014-2018
Next year will see events commemorating the onset of WW1. Various organisations in communities throughout the country will be running projects - in many cases, extending until the centenary of Armistice Day in 2018. Blandford already has a steering committee and a group of organisations, plus individuals, with plans in hand.
It may be felt that to depict anything to do with WW1 would be too sad and horrific. However, not to commemorate the sacrifices of those involved would be ungrateful, so Blandford Art Society has put forward its own proposals:-
Please give your details to a committee member if you would be interested in being involved in this.
The contribution of the BAS to Blandford's events begins with Claire Thomas' January talk on WW1 war artists.

- BAS to accept commissions for drawings/painting from other participating organisations that they may wish to use as part of their events.
- Acting as ‘war artists’ to record events. There will be a glut of photographs, so why not a more traditional approach? “A war artist creates a visual account of war by showing its impact as men and women are shown waiting, preparing, fighting, suffering, and celebrating.”
- Using work produced to form the basis of a BAS exhibition, initially running online concurrently with events, and culminating in a major, live one in 2018.
Please give your details to a committee member if you would be interested in being involved in this.

Two Exhibitions in August 2014
One of our members, Margaret Hasted, will be involved in a couple of exhibitions during August.
Firstly, she has a solo exhibition in Church House, Wimborne, from 4 to 9 August: 11.00am to 4.00pm daily. It will be raising funds for LEAF, a local charity that supports those who suffer from Leukaemia and blood cancers and educates/fundraises for local Dorset patients with much needed financial support during their treatments. More information can be found on their website: http://www.leafcharity.com
Secondly, Margaret is involved in an exhibition showing works by four ladies during the following week: 11 to 17 August, at the same venue, which will raise funds for the Lewis Manning Hospice in Poole. This hospice provides invaluable services to patients in Dorset, including those in the Blandford area.

'Art Inside'
Members' Exhibition
Bank Holiday Monday, 5 May 2014
This exhibition was a great success. Set in the unique location of Blandford Parish Church, it drew the crowds in from the hustle and bustle of Blandford's streets on the day of the Georgian Fayre.
Visitors expressed admiration of the quality of work displayed and the way pieces were separately displayed on easels.
The Church's restoration fund, The Cupola Project, benefited from the extra visitors and members' donations given in lieu of submission fees.

Linking in with our talk in January 2014 by Claire Thomas and the current interest in World War 1, you might find the following exhibition at Southampton City Art Gallery interesting, called 'The Artists' Rifles'.
At the outbreak of WW1, Paul Nash, a prominent artist, gave up painting and enlisted in the 'Artists' Rifles', eventually joining and fighting with the Hampshire Regiment. This exhibition includes a history of the regiment and its members through a selection of artworks, including loans from the Royal Academy, the Imperial War Museum, British Council, and the Arts Council England.
